8. Do colored waxes really work?

First, there are thousands of different colors used every year to coat the millions of cars manufactured every year. Some paint companies offer over one hundred different hues of white alone! There is no way that a limited selection of 8-12 different-colored waxes can even begin to hope to match the multiple different hues inherent in the particular color of your car, or anyone's car for that matter.

Second, most cars being manufactured today, and in the last 10 years have a clear coat finish. This top, clear layer of paint does not contain any color pigments whatsoever.

It doesn't make any common sense at all to apply a pigmented or colored wax on top of a paint that is as clear as the windshield you look through. To do so would be to temporarily cloud, or discolor the original color coat that is lying underneath your clear coat. You are creating an unnatural effect that will look even stranger as the pigments in the wax fade.

If your goal is to have a great looking finish, then it makes more sense to spend your time and effort up front performing good surface prep. This includes claying the surface to remove bonded contaminants followed with paint cleaners like ScratchX to remove defects instead of trying to temporarily fill them in. Good surface prep is key to all great looking finishes, just ask any professional detailer.

For those of you looking for a one-step product that will restore the clarity to your clear coat so that the color coat underneath can shine through, then instead of wasting your money on gimmicky colored waxes, try a brand new wax Meguiar's has recently introduced called, ColorX®.

ColorX is a one-step cleaner wax with extraordinary cleaning power that restores clarity to your clear coat without using harmful abrasives. Not only will it remove years of neglect, but it will dramatically restore full clarity to the clear layer of paint resulting in an optically clear surface that enables your eyes to fully experience the beautiful color coat underneath. And best of all, this new wax provides Meguiar's famous long lasting synthetic polymer protection to lock in the beauty for an extended period of time.
